Product Hunt Launch Video: What Works, Specs, Gallery GIF and Checklist

How to make a Product Hunt launch video: YouTube-only rules, a 30–60 second structure, gallery size 1270x760, a thumbnail GIF under 3MB and a launch checklist.

A Product Hunt launch video should be a 30–60 second YouTube video that shows one problem and your product solving it, ending with a clear call to action. Product Hunt only accepts YouTube links for video, so upload it ahead of time as public or unlisted. Pair it with a gallery of at least two 1270x760 images (animated GIFs are allowed) and a square 240x240 thumbnail under 3MB.

Video is optional, but Product Hunt's own launch guide says about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 include a video. Here's what works, with the specs from Product Hunt's help pages.

What are Product Hunt's media specs?

All of these come from Product Hunt's posting guide, media help article and launch guide, checked 17 October 2026.

Asset Spec Notes
Thumbnail Square, 240x240 recommended Required
Thumbnail GIF Under 3MB Animates only on hover; avoid strobing and quick cuts
Gallery images 1270x760 recommended At least 2 needed before the gallery shows
Gallery GIFs Allowed Keep them light; Product Hunt says "all images, GIF or not, need to be under 3MB" in its thumbnail guidance
Video YouTube link only Must not be private; use the full URL, not a short link
Video length No limit given 30–60 s is our recommendation
Interactive demo Arcade, Storylane, Hexus, Supademo, Layerpath, ScreenSpace Added to the gallery like a YouTube link

Two details catch people out on launch day:

  • Shortened YouTube links (youtu.be) don't load. Paste the full youtube.com/watch?v= URL.
  • A private video fails silently. Set it to public or unlisted, and test it while logged out.

For every other platform you'll post to that week, see the demo video sizes and specs cheat sheet.

What makes a Product Hunt video work?

Visitors scroll through a long list of launches each day. Your video gets a few seconds to earn a click, then maybe half a minute of attention.

Lead with the outcome

The first frame should show what your product produces, not your logo. If it's an analytics tool, open on the insight. If it's a design tool, open on the finished design.

Show one job, not a feature tour

Pick the single workflow that makes people say "I need that". Show it in two or three steps and cut everything else. The gallery images can cover the other features.

Make it readable without sound

Assume people are watching with the sound off. Burn in captions or on-screen callouts so the story makes sense muted. Keep callouts to three to five words.

Make it feel made by people

Product Hunt's guide notes the community likes fun: it once gave a Best Video award at the Golden Kitty Awards. You don't need an agency. The same guide says that without budget for a high-end video, a quick demo "can go a long way". What matters is clear and short, not expensive.

How should you structure a 45-second launch video?

Time Beat What's on screen
0–4 s Hook The result, with a 5–7 word headline
4–10 s Problem One line of text, or a "before" screen
10–32 s Three key moments One screen each, zoom on the element, callout
32–40 s Result The finished state, held long enough to read
40–45 s CTA Product name, one line, URL or "Live on Product Hunt today"

Pick music with a clear build and drop, and land the result on the drop. Cutting on the beat makes a simple screen-based video feel finished. Our product demo video guide covers scripting in more detail.

The gallery is where most visitors spend their time. A short GIF in position two or three shows motion without a click.

  1. Take 5–8 seconds from your video. One action and its result, not a montage.
  2. Export at the gallery's proportions. 1270x760 is about 5:3, so crop or reframe your 16:9 footage to fit, or the gallery will letterbox it.
  3. Keep the file small. Fewer colours, fewer frames and a shorter loop all help. If you go over the size limit, shorten it before lowering quality.
  4. Make the first frame meaningful. On the thumbnail, the GIF only plays on hover. Elsewhere, a strong first frame still helps while it loads.
  5. Avoid flashing. Product Hunt may edit GIFs with strobing effects, quick cuts or unreadable text.

Our editor, Lumora, exports GIF alongside MP4 from the same edit, using an ffmpeg palette so UI colours stay clean. Any tool that exports GIF with a custom palette will do the job.

What's a good Product Hunt launch video checklist?

One to two weeks before

  1. Write a 60–100 word script for the main video using the five-beat structure above.
  2. Capture clean screens with realistic demo data.
  3. Edit the main video (30–60 s, 16:9, 1920x1080).
  4. Cut a 5–8 s gallery GIF and a 240x240 thumbnail (GIF under 3MB, or a still).
  5. Make at least two 1270x760 gallery images, and more if the product needs explaining.
  6. Make a 9:16 cut for X, LinkedIn and Shorts on launch day.

Two to three days before

  1. Upload the video to YouTube as public or unlisted. Test the full URL in a logged-out browser.
  2. Add the YouTube link, gallery and thumbnail to your scheduled post, and check the order.
  3. Watch the video on a phone with sound off. Can you follow it?

Launch day

  1. Post the 9:16 or 1:1 cut natively on X and LinkedIn with captions, linking to your Product Hunt page.
  2. Add a GIF or short clip to your first comment if it shows something the gallery doesn't.
  3. Put the main video on your landing page so visitors from Product Hunt see the same story.

Can an agent make the launch video for you?

If you already work in Claude Code or Codex, an agent can assemble the first cut from your screenshots and a short brief, then render MP4 and GIF versions. We wrote up how that works over MCP, using release videos as the example. Watch the result yourself before launch day. The checklist still applies.

FAQ

Do you need a video to launch on Product Hunt?

No, it's optional. But Product Hunt says about 53% of products that reached Product of the Day since 2021 included a video.

How do you add a video to Product Hunt?

Upload it to YouTube, make sure it is not private, and paste the full YouTube URL into the gallery. Product Hunt only supports YouTube links, and shortened links won't load.

What size are Product Hunt gallery images?

Product Hunt recommends 1270x760 for gallery images, and the gallery needs at least two images before it shows on your post. The thumbnail should be square, ideally 240x240.

Can the Product Hunt thumbnail be a GIF?

Yes, if it is under 3MB. It only animates on hover, so the first frame must work as a still image, and Product Hunt may edit GIFs with strobing, quick cuts or unreadable text.

How long should a Product Hunt launch video be?

Product Hunt gives no length limit. 30 to 60 seconds is enough to show one problem, the product solving it and a call to action, and most visitors are scanning many launches that day.
